Mary Mays was the sixth child of Joseph Mays & Amelia Stone born September 8th, 1876 & christened June 1879 at St John’s, Ladbroke Grove, Kensington, Middlesex.
In 1881 the family was living at Alfred Mews, Kensington where her father was a coachman & Mary had 5 brothers by this time.
Mary was still living at home at Cromwell Rd, Kensington at the time of the 1891 census & was described as a scholar.
Mary married William John Thorne, a plumber, on February 2nd, 1896 at All Souls, Marylebone. Witnesses at the wedding were Sarah Jane Thorne & Edward Alfred Mays, Mary’s brother. William was born November 11th, 1875 at Wingrave, Bucks, the son of Lucy & Alfred Thorne, a painter.
In 1901 Mary & William were living at 47 Lancaster Rd, Notting Hill, Kensington & William was a plumber. They had 2 children – Evelyn J M (5) & Edith L (1). Living with them was Alfred Thorne, William’s widowed father (55) who was still a painter.
William & Mary were still at the same address in 1911 & William continued to be a plumber in the building trade. Daughters Evelyn, now a dressmaker, & Edith, a scholar, were both at home.
The 1939 register shows William & Mary living with daughter Evelyn & her husband Ernest Warren, a newspaper clerk, & their family. They were living at 141 Russell Lane, East Barnet, Herts & William was described as incapacitated.
